In my current series, Journey to Water, I pay homage to African American quilt-making traditions. Historically used as a form of storytelling and a coded map to freedom, quilts become a powerful symbol of protection in my work. This series was born from my own struggle with sleeplessness. I began to imagine ceramic quilts as sources of peace, restoration, and spiritual shelter.
I created this vase after learning that my great-grandmother used to make pottery in her youth in Nigeria.
